Are you expecting a baby in South Kensington? Are you looking for advice on preparing your home for your new baby?
Getting ready for your baby’s arrival can feel overwhelming. Your due date is rapidly approaching, and you may feel worried not only about how you’ll care for your baby but also about how you should be preparing for when they come home.
To help reduce stress we’ve put together our top tips on how to get organised and prepare your home for your newborn.
Stock up on food
Having a new baby will leave you with little time for cooking and food shopping, so it’s helpful to stock up on groceries, frozen meals, and anything else you’ll need after the baby arrives. Preparing meals in bulk and freezing them for quick defrosting, heating, and eating is also an easy way to save time, especially after a busy day caring for your baby.
Install the car seat
Installing a car seat for your child before they arrive is one of the most important steps you can take because most hospitals cannot discharge babies without one. After childbirth, the chances are, you’ll be very tired. Therefore, it’s beneficial to practise installing and removing the car seat safely – especially if you’ve got a car seat that doubles up as a baby carrier – before your little one arrives. And remember, always keep the instructions nearby in case you need them.
Get the basic baby essentials
It will take a while before your newborn is crawling around the house, so you don’t need to do too much to make it crawling safe immediately. Instead, focus on getting all the essential baby products like clothing, nappies, feeding equipment, blankets, and a cot or Moses basket. This will mean that you can spend time recovering, relaxing, and bonding with your new bundle of joy when you return home.
Shopping for your nursery? If you live in South Kensington, you really are spoilt for choice. As well as the more well-known high street chains, you’ll find plenty of local boutiques bursting with beautiful nursery furniture and accessories, including Blue Almonds and Naturalmat Nursery Showroom.
We get it, knowing what to buy can sometimes feel mind-boggling – after all, there is so much out there to choose from. Consider joining the Kensington Mums Facebook group. Not only does this group give you the chance to meet mums-to-be and parents in the area, but it’s also a platform for you to seek advice and information about specific products.
Set up the nursery room
It’s definitely worth setting up the nursery room before your baby is born. While your baby may sleep in your room at first, they will eventually need a room of their own. The nursery should include:
- A cot
- A changing station
- Ideally, a comfortable armchair for late-night feedings
- Storage for baby’s clothes, toys, and other necessities.
It will be easier for you to bring your baby into a fully prepared room where everything you need is right there. Plus, getting your baby’s nursery ready definitely helps expectant parents to get excited about the soon-to-be arrival of their little one.
Declutter your home
Your newborn baby will soon fill your home with a lot of baby gear and toys, so we would recommend decluttering your house and creating more space in the early days of your pregnancy before it becomes more challenging to bend down.
If you are having a clear-out, why don’t you donate to a local charity shop? With Royal Trinity Hospice Charity Shop, Oxfam and Fara Charity Shop all on your doorstep, there are plenty of good causes for you to choose from, that are sure to take your pre-loved items off your hands.
